If you have curly hair, you’ve probably lived this exact scenario: you deep-condition, you use a leave-in, you seal with oil — and your curls still puff up into a cloud by the afternoon. It feels like a betrayal. Here’s what’s actually going on, in plain terms.
First, what your hair is actually made of
Think of each strand of hair like a tiny tree trunk. It has three layers:
- The cuticle — the outer layer. It’s made of overlapping cells, a bit like roof shingles or the bark of a tree. Its job is to protect the inner layers, but it’s easily damaged — and once it’s damaged, the layer underneath loses moisture and gets exposed to the environment, just like wood exposed after bark is stripped away.
- The cortex — the thick middle layer, like the wood of the tree trunk. It’s made of coiled, spring-shaped protein molecules arranged in parallel bundles. This is where your curl pattern actually “lives.”
- The medulla — a thin core layer in the very middle (only present in thicker/coarser hair), which mainly holds moisture, similar to the soft pith at the center of a tree trunk.

Here’s the key detail: whether your follicle (the pore your hair grows out of) is straight or curved determines whether your hair grows out straight or curly, and the more unevenly the proteins are distributed in that curved shape, the curlier your hair is. So curl pattern is baked in structurally, not just a “look.”
Why curly hair is frizz-prone to begin with — even before humidity gets involved

So why does adding more hydration sometimes make it worse?

These two words get used interchangeably, but they describe different jobs:
- Hydration = getting water into the strand (think: water-based leave-ins, aloe, glycerin).
- Moisturization/sealing = locking that water in with something oil- or butter-based so it doesn’t evaporate out or let excess humidity flood back in.
Hydration gives curls their spring and bounce, but without something sealing it in, the hair dries out and turns rough and frizzy again quickly. Water without a seal is like filling a leaky bucket — it goes in, but it doesn’t stay.

This is why “just add more moisture” advice can fail on humid days specifically — the air already has plenty of moisture; what’s actually needed is something that blocks water vapor from moving in and out so freely, like film-forming ingredients (e.g., certain polymers) or silicones that coat the hair and slow that exchange.
