Sudan gold mine collapse claims dozens of lives

At least 67 people have died after a gold mine collapsed in a remote area of Sudan’s West Kordofan province.

The incident occurred at the al-Zara gold mine in Nuhud, according to local medical workers and survivors.

The collapse reportedly happened late Tuesday, leaving several workers missing beneath the rubble.

Rescue teams were still searching the site when the death toll was reported.

Rescue teams search for missing miners

The Sudan gold mine collapse has raised concerns about the safety of workers in the country’s informal mining sector.

A local medical group said the number of deaths could increase as rescue operations continue.

Survivors reported that several people remained trapped inside the mine.

However, the difficult conditions at the site have made the rescue effort challenging.

Further details about the cause of the collapse have not yet been confirmed.

Mine located in an area controlled by RSF

The al-Zara mine is located in West Kordofan, an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has been fighting Sudan’s military for more than three years.

The ongoing conflict has affected access to several parts of the country.

It has also made emergency response efforts more difficult in areas where fighting and insecurity continue.

    Informal mining raises safety concerns

Gold mining remains an important economic activity in Sudan.

However, many mining operations are informal and lack adequate safety measures.

Such conditions can increase the risks faced by workers, particularly in remote locations.

The latest tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers associated with mining without proper safety systems.

As rescuers continue their work, families are waiting for more information about those who remain missing.

The final death toll is expected to become clearer after the search operation is completed.
