In March 1999, a team of climbers and archaeologists reached the summit area of Llullaillaco, a volcano more than 6,700 metres (22,000 feet) high on the border between Argentina and Chile [1]. Working at one of the highest archaeological sites on Earth, the team, led by Johan Reinhard and María Constanza Ceruti, uncovered a sealed Inca shrine containing the bodies of three children [1, 2].
The cold, dry conditions near the summit had kept the bodies, their clothing and even their hair remarkably intact for roughly five centuries [2]. The oldest of the three, a teenage girl now known as the Llullaillaco Maiden or La Doncella, has since become one of the most studied human remains from the pre-Columbian Americas. What researchers have learned from her body, and especially from her hair, offers a rare, detailed window into a ritual that shaped political life across the Inca Empire.
Who were the children of Llullaillaco
The three individuals found in the shrine were a girl estimated at around 13 to 15 years old, a boy aged roughly 4 to 5, and a younger girl of similar age nicknamed the Lightning Girl because her burial site was later struck by lightning [3, 2]. Each was buried separately within the same shrine complex, dressed in fine woven textiles and surrounded by pottery, small figurines and food offerings [2, 4].
DNA and skeletal analysis showed the three had no biological relationship to one another and were not local to the immediate area where they died [4]. This detail matters because it fits what Spanish colonial chroniclers later wrote about capacocha, the Inca ritual believed to be behind these deaths. According to those accounts, children selected for the ceremony were often drawn from different provinces of the empire, sometimes brought to the imperial capital of Cusco before being sent out to sacred mountains [5].
It is worth being clear about what is documented and what is reconstructed. Written descriptions of capacocha come mostly from Spanish sources recorded after the conquest, decades or more after the Inca state itself had collapsed, so they carry the biases and gaps of any outsider account [5]. The physical evidence from Llullaillaco is what allows researchers to check, and in places correct, those later written descriptions.
Capacocha: a ritual with religious and political weight
Capacocha ceremonies are described in colonial-era sources as offerings tied to major events, such as the death of a ruling Inca, a natural disaster, or the need to secure the favour of mountain deities believed to control weather and fertility [5, 3]. Selected children were considered symbolically pure and were treated with elevated status in the period leading up to the ceremony [3].
Archaeologists studying the Llullaillaco burial believe the Maiden was likely the principal offering, based on the richness of the objects buried with her compared with the two younger children [6, 4]. Her hair was elaborately, tightly braided, while the boy’s hair showed signs of neglect, including lice, suggesting the three were not treated identically in the time before death [4].
Beyond religion, recent research has pointed to a political dimension as well. A ceremony performed on a remote mountain in a newly absorbed part of the empire could serve to visibly assert imperial authority over local communities and reinforce ties between the region and the Inca state [7]. This idea, discussed further below, is central to a 2026 study that re-examined when the Llullaillaco sacrifice took place.
Reading a life story in strands of hair
Human scalp hair grows at a fairly steady rate, roughly one centimetre a month, and it locks in chemical traces of whatever a person has eaten, drunk or otherwise absorbed into their bloodstream while that section was growing [8]. Because the Maiden’s hair was about 28 centimetres long, it preserved close to two and a half years of dietary history, far more than could be recovered from her bones or teeth alone [8].
By cutting the hair into short segments and analysing the carbon and nitrogen isotopes in each one, a team led by Andrew Wilson at the University of Bradford was able to trace changes in her diet month by month, working backward from the point of death [9, 6].
The results, first published in 2007 and expanded in later research, showed a sharp shift roughly twelve months before she died. Her diet moved from foods typical of highland farming communities, mainly potatoes and other tubers, to foods considered prestigious in Inca society, particularly maize and animal protein [6, 9]. Researchers interpret this as evidence that her social status was deliberately raised in preparation for the sacrifice, since access to maize and meat was closely tied to elite status in the Inca world [6].
What the hair showed about drugs and alcohol
A separate study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 2013, examined the same hair samples for chemical markers of coca and alcohol use [10]. Using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, the researchers detected benzoylecgonine and cocaethylene, compounds that form when cocaine (from coca leaves) and alcohol are consumed, respectively [10].
The data showed her coca consumption rising alongside her change in diet about a year before death, then peaking around six months before she died [11, 10]. Her alcohol intake told a different story: it rose sharply only in her final weeks [11, 10]. CT scans also showed a wad of chewed coca leaf still lodged in her cheek, meaning she had been chewing coca at or very close to the time of her death [10, 12].
The two younger children showed the same substances in their hair, but at much lower levels, again suggesting the Maiden was treated differently, and perhaps more intensively prepared, than her younger companions [11, 12].
Researchers who worked on the PNAS study proposed that this pattern of rising coca and alcohol use may have served to sedate the children as the ceremony approached, potentially easing both physical distress from cold exposure and any fear or resistance in the final hours [10, 13]. Some also note that alcohol dulls the body’s shivering response, so heavy drinking in freezing conditions could have hastened death by exposure, though coca has effects that partly work against this, since it constricts blood vessels and can raise body temperature slightly [13]. This part of the story is a documented finding, but the exact chain of cause and effect around how each child ultimately died remains an interpretation researchers continue to debate, not a settled fact.
A hidden clue: hair cut and carried up the mountain
Among the objects buried with the Maiden was a small bag containing a separate lock of human hair [14]. Genetic testing confirmed the hair belonged to her, not to another individual [14]. Because both this bagged hair and the hair still on her head carried the same isotopic record of her change in diet, researchers were able to line up the two samples and work out when the bagged lock had been cut from her head, roughly six months before she died [14, 15].
This detail supports the idea that stages of the ritual process were marked in physical, symbolic ways, and that objects tied to her identity, including her own hair, were deliberately gathered and carried with her to the summit shrine [14].
When did the sacrifice happen, and why then
For years, the timing of the Llullaillaco sacrifice was known only broadly. Radiocarbon dating of hair samples conducted in 2007 placed the deaths somewhere between 1430 and 1520, a range spanning nearly a century of Inca history [16].
A 2026 study published in the journal Archaeometry, led by Dominika Sieczkowska-Jacyna and colleagues, narrowed this considerably [17]. Rather than dating the mummies themselves again, the team radiocarbon-dated short-lived plant remains buried with the Maiden, including maize, cassava and coca leaves [17]. Because these plants were harvested not long before the ceremony, they offered a tighter timestamp than the human remains, which had accumulated carbon over a longer period [17, 18].
Combining this radiocarbon data with isotope studies and statistical chronological modelling, the researchers narrowed the likely date of the ceremony to between 1462 and 1507, with the modelling pointing most strongly toward a date around 1499 [17, 18]. That places the sacrifice during the reigns of the Inca rulers Topa Inca and his son Huayna Capac, a period marked by rapid military expansion and the consolidation of newly conquered territory across the empire [18, 17]. The region around Llullaillaco had only recently come under Inca control by that point [18].
The researchers argue this timing supports the idea that the ceremony was not purely religious but also served a political purpose, reinforcing the authority of a still-expanding empire in a distant province [18]. Historical accounts describe journeys by Huayna Capac into southern parts of the empire involving rich offerings to the gods, although no surviving document directly names the Llullaillaco burial as part of those specific journeys, so this connection remains a plausible interpretation rather than a confirmed link [18].
A related but separate discovery: deliberate mummification
Readers researching Llullaillaco will likely also come across a 2026 study on deliberate mummification in capacocha victims. It is worth noting clearly that this study concerns different mummies from different mountains. Led by Dagmara Socha of the University of Warsaw, the research used CT scanning to examine four naturally preserved children recovered from the volcanoes Ampato and Sara Sara in southern Peru, not Llullaillaco [19, 20].
The scans revealed the first confirmed case of deliberate postmortem alteration of a capacocha victim’s body, alongside evidence of injuries and disease in the children studied [19, 20]. This finding adds an important new layer to the broader understanding of capacocha practices across the Andes, but it should not be confused with, or attributed to, the Llullaillaco children specifically.
Separating documented fact from popular myth
Because the Llullaillaco Maiden’s story circulates widely online, some claims attached to her go beyond what has actually been documented. A few points worth clarifying:
It is documented, and supported by peer-reviewed research, that her diet and drug intake changed sharply in her final year, that she was chewing coca at the time of death, and that a lock of her own hair was buried with her [10, 6, 14]. It is also documented that her body remains remarkably well preserved due to the cold, dry, high-altitude environment, and that she is currently held at the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) in Salta, Argentina [2, 3].
It is not confirmed exactly how she died. Researchers have proposed hypothermia or asphyxiation as likely causes based on the absence of visible trauma, but no single definitive cause of death has been established for her specifically [3, 21]. Popular retellings sometimes state a precise cause of death with more certainty than the evidence actually supports, and this should be treated as an informed hypothesis rather than a settled finding.
Claims that circulate describing her as calm, willing or fully aware throughout the ritual are also interpretive rather than documented. The chemical evidence for rising coca and alcohol use is consistent with an effort to sedate her, but it cannot tell us what she understood, felt or agreed to in her final days [10, 13].
Why this story resonates beyond one region
The Llullaillaco Maiden’s case is often framed as a South American story, but the underlying questions it raises, about how ancient states used ritual and sacrifice to project power, and how communities have historically responded to environmental extremes and political pressure, are recognisable well beyond the Andes. High-altitude and high-status ritual burials, along with practices tied to consolidating authority over newly incorporated territory, have parallels described in the archaeological and historical records of societies across Asia and Africa, from state-sponsored ceremonial burials to sacrificial practices recorded in early written histories. Read in that light, the scientific detail recovered from a single burial on a South American volcano offers a case study relevant to anyone interested in how ancient empires, on any continent, used religion and ritual to hold vast and diverse territories together.
What makes the Llullaillaco case unusual is not the ritual itself, which chroniclers had already described in general terms, but the extraordinary level of physical detail that natural preservation and modern laboratory methods have made possible to recover from a single strand of hair.
