Dangote Refinery IPO attracts public interest
Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has launched Africa’s biggest initial public offering (IPO), allowing members of the public to buy shares in the major oil facility.
The share sale aims to raise about $1.6 billion to support the refinery’s expansion plans.
The offering has been described as a “people’s IPO” because it is designed to give ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to invest in the business founded by billionaire Aliko Dangote.
Investors can buy refinery shares
The refinery is offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each.
Investors can buy a minimum of 10 shares, bringing the starting investment to ₦5,250.
The offer is available through digital investment platforms. This approach is intended to make it easier for retail investors to participate in the share sale.
The IPO values the refinery at almost $48 billion, according to Reuters.
However, the offer has also raised questions about the refinery’s valuation and the level of control that will remain with Dangote.
Dangote retains majority ownership
Despite the public offering, Aliko Dangote will retain a controlling stake in the refinery.
The sale is expected to broaden ownership of the business while helping the company raise funds for future projects.
The refinery was built at a cost of about $20 billion and began operations in 2024.
It has a production capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The facility has also helped Nigeria reduce its dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
Refinery plans major expansion
The funds raised through the IPO will support plans to increase the refinery’s capacity.
Dangote intends to expand production to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years.
The expansion could strengthen the refinery’s position in the international oil market.
It could also help Nigeria increase its exports of refined petroleum products.
The refinery has already become an important supplier of products such as diesel and aviation fuel to foreign markets.
IPO tests investor appetite
The Dangote Refinery IPO comes as interest in Nigeria’s capital market continues to grow.
The share sale is expected to attract both institutional investors and individuals seeking a stake in one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.
However, some analysts have questioned whether the share price will be affordable for many Nigerians.
There have also been reports of heavy demand on some digital investment platforms following the launch.
The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, while trading on the Nigerian Exchange is expected to begin later in November.
