Kenya wins 2029 World Athletics hosting rights

Nairobi prepares to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Kenya

Kenya 2029 World Athletics plans will make Nairobi the first African city to host the senior World Athletics Championships.

The East African nation defeated London and Rome in the bidding process. Munich, meanwhile, secured the rights to host the 2031 edition.

Kenya’s victory followed improvements in infrastructure, its strong athletics tradition and a renewed effort to expand the sport’s global reach.

President William Ruto described the decision as a victory for generations of Kenyan athletes.

Kenya’s athletics history strengthens its bid

Kenya is one of the most successful countries in World Athletics Championships history.

The country has won 72 gold medals at the global event. It also has 38 Olympic gold medals, with most of its success coming in middle- and long-distance races.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said athletics was “woven into the fabric” of Kenyan society.

He also praised the country’s contribution to the history of the sport.

Several leading Kenyan athletes supported the bid. They included two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, 800-metre world record holder David Rudisha and multiple champion Faith Kipyegon.

Kenya also has a strong domestic following for athletics.

A World Athletics survey found that 68% of Kenyans had a high level of interest in the sport. The global average stood at 39%.

Kasarani Stadium upgrade addresses past concerns

Kenya previously missed out on hosting the 2025 World Championships. Facilities were reportedly one of the areas where its earlier bid performed poorly.

The country has since worked to improve its infrastructure.

The 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi is undergoing a major upgrade. The venue is expected to host football matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.

Barnaba Korir, who worked on the successful bid, said the country had learned from its earlier setback.

He explained that Kenya improved the areas where it had received low scores during the previous bidding process.

Nairobi’s hospitality sector also played a role in the bid. The city regularly hosts major international conferences and has a well-established tourism industry.

Kenya receives financial and security guarantees

President Ruto provided financial and security guarantees as part of Kenya’s successful proposal.

The Kenyan government is expected to fund the championships. Officials estimate that the government’s contribution will be about $78 million.

Additional sponsorship agreements are also expected to support the event.

Organisers believe the funding commitment will remain valid even if Kenya’s government changes after the next presidential election.

However, the country still faces several challenges before the championships begin.

Transport and ticketing remain key issues

Kasarani Stadium is located about 30 minutes from Nairobi’s central business district. However, the venue does not have a direct rail connection.

Kenya’s transport plan received positive feedback from World Athletics officials. Still, organisers must ensure that spectators can reach and leave the stadium safely.

There have also been concerns about overcrowding at the venue during previous football matches.

Ticket prices will be another important issue.

Organisers want to attract large crowds without pricing local fans out of the event.

Attendance at the 2017 Under-18 World Championships in Nairobi improved after entry was made free. Kenya will therefore need an effective ticketing strategy to fill the stadium during the 2029 championships.

The country must also address concerns linked to recent doping cases.

World Athletics will closely monitor Kenya’s preparations as Nairobi gets ready to host the first senior global athletics championships on African soil.
