A fiery exchange between Accra’s Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and a junior police officer recently captured attention when a tense confrontation happened in broad daylight.
During a major decongestion operation in the Central Business District, video footage surfaced showing the mayor intervening while the officer conducted traffic checks. The officer, reportedly from the Formed Police Unit (FPU), had stopped a vehicle laden with goods being offloaded after authorized time. In the ensuing back-and-forth:
The Mayor intervened, telling the officer to “Shut up!” and questioned his authority—“Who are you?”
The officer defended his actions, asserting he was enforcing official regulations.
The mayor then accused, “You are collecting money from drivers.”
The officer quickly responded, “Did you see me collecting money?” You can’t just say I was collecting money. Whatever you want to do, go ahead and do it”.
