The Otumfuo cancer centre has secured engineering support from ADB Ghana Medical Systems Group Limited as work progresses on the $100 million project in the Ashanti Region.
The Ghanaian healthcare company is leading the hospital engineering and infrastructure component of the project at Kwaso in the Ejisu Municipality.
ADB Ghana Medical Systems takes on new role
ADB Ghana Medical Systems is known for supplying medical equipment to health facilities.
The company has now expanded into hospital engineering, construction, maintenance and project management.
Its founder, Adann Benjamin Diaz, said the company wants to do more than supply equipment.
“Our ambition is not simply to supply medical equipment. We want to build a company that provides solutions.”
He said the company also wants to help develop the infrastructure needed for quality healthcare in Ghana and across Africa.
The company’s work includes planning and managing hospital environments.
It also covers technical systems, utilities and specialised infrastructure needed to keep health facilities running.
Cancer centre is a $100m project
The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Excellence is being developed on 52 acres of land at Kwaso.
The five-year project is named after Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Breast Care International, Peace and Love Hospitals, Global Health Catalyst and the University of Pennsylvania are funding the project.
The full project is estimated at $100 million.
The first phase is expected to cost about $10 million.
First phase will include radiotherapy
The first phase will include a radiotherapy suite.
It will also have a research wing, an artificial intelligence hub and an education centre.
Community outreach facilities are also planned.
When fully completed, the centre is expected to provide chemotherapy, brachytherapy and CT scan services.
It will also have admission wards, laboratories, surgical theatres and recovery wards.
Centre targets advanced cancer care
The project is expected to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to provide specialised cancer treatment.
Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of Breast Care International and Founding Director of the centre, said the facility will also support medical tourism.
She said the centre is expected to reduce the need for cancer patients from Africa to travel overseas for treatment.
More than 250 people are expected to work at the centre when it is completed.
The facility will combine treatment, research, training and community outreach.
ADB also works on cardiac facility
The cancer centre is not ADB Ghana Medical Systems’ only major healthcare project.
The company is also involved in developing a specialist cardiology facility at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
The facility is expected to bring advanced cardiac services closer to patients in the Ashanti Region.
A technical working visit recently assessed areas including power capacity, utilities and structural planning.
Company plans wider expansion
ADB Ghana Medical Systems says it wants to become a major Ghanaian healthcare solutions company.
Its services now cover medical technology, engineering and project management.
The company also plans to expand into other West African markets.
Diaz said indigenous companies have an important role to play in addressing Africa’s healthcare challenges.
He said the company’s focus should ultimately be on improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
The Otumfuo cancer centre project therefore gives the company an opportunity to apply that approach to one of Ghana’s major planned specialised healthcare facilities.
