What began as a private argument between a young military couple has ended in tragedy at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, where a newlywed army doctor lost his life in a shocking act of domestic violence.
Lieutenant Dr. Samson Haruna, a military medical officer from Jos, was allegedly set ablaze by his wife during a confrontation that spiraled out of control. The dispute reportedly began after Mrs. Haruna, a nurse, accused her husband of being unfaithful.
Witnesses say the quarrel escalated late in the evening of September 22, 2025, when emotions flared and, in a moment of rage, the woman allegedly poured petrol on her husband before igniting it.
The young officer, who had only joined the army in 2024 and married his wife in April 2025, sustained severe burns. He was first taken to the barracks clinic and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where doctors fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Military and police officials confirmed the arrest of Mrs. Haruna, who is now in custody and expected to face trial once investigations conclude.
The news has left the military community reeling, with colleagues describing Lt. Haruna as a dedicated, disciplined, and passionate doctor-soldier who had shown exceptional promise.
Friends and fellow officers have expressed grief over the tragedy, calling it a painful reminder of how quickly domestic issues can turn fatal.
