Buying a mobile phone should not start with the brand name, camera megapixels, or the number printed next to the RAM. A good phone is one that does the work you need, works properly on your mobile network, supports the apps you use, receives suitable software and security support, and remains usable for a reasonable period of time.
This is important because people buy phones for very different reasons. One person may need WhatsApp, banking apps, maps, email, and a good camera. Another may mainly need reliable calls and SMS. A student, mobile gamer, delivery driver, business owner, photographer, older adult, and child may all need very different devices.
The best approach is therefore to buy for your actual use, not simply for the biggest numbers on the box.
Start With the Question: What Will You Use the Phone For?
Before comparing specifications, decide what the phone must do.

The table above is practical buying guidance rather than a technical standard. The correct choice still depends on the individual user and the exact phone model.
What Actually Makes a Phone Good Quality?
A high-quality phone is not simply a phone with expensive materials. Several parts must work well together.
The Main Things to Check

A phone with excellent hardware but poor software support may become inconvenient or insecure earlier than expected. Likewise, an inexpensive phone that performs all of the buyer’s required tasks reliably can be a better purchase than an expensive flagship filled with unused features.
1. RAM: More Is Useful, but RAM Is Not Everything
RAM is temporary working memory. Android documentation describes RAM as the fastest main type of device memory, while storage holds persistent data such as apps and files. When available memory becomes too low, Android can remove background processes to free memory (Android Developers, 2026a).
In simple terms, RAM helps when you:
- switch between several apps;
- keep browser tabs open;
- play demanding games;
- edit photos or videos;
- use navigation while other apps are operating; or
- perform several tasks at once.
A low-RAM phone can still perform simple tasks, but heavy multitasking is more likely to force background applications to close. Google specifically develops Android Go edition for lower-memory devices, which also shows that software can be designed differently for phones with limited RAM (Android Developers, n.d.).

Important: These ranges are my practical buying recommendations, not official industry requirements. Operating systems and manufacturers manage memory differently, so two phones with the same RAM can perform differently.
Do not buy a weak phone simply because advertising claims that it has a very large amount of “extended,” “virtual,” or similar memory. Find out how much physical RAM the phone actually contains.
2. Storage: Think About the Next Few Years, Not Just Today
Storage is different from RAM. Storage is where the operating system, applications, photographs, videos, downloads, documents, music and other permanent files are kept (Android Developers, 2026a).
A phone advertised as having a certain storage capacity will not normally leave that entire amount available for personal files because the operating system and pre-installed software also require storage.
Practical Storage Guide

These figures are practical recommendations, not universal standards.
If the phone has a microSD slot, check what the manufacturer actually allows the card to do. A memory card may be useful for photographs, videos, music and documents, but app-storage behaviour differs between devices.
For buyers intending to use an SD card for applications, the SD Association created A1 and A2 Application Performance Classes. These standards include minimum random and sequential performance requirements intended for running application data on SD cards (SD Association, n.d.).
Also remember that capacity and speed are different things. A large storage number does not automatically tell you how quickly that storage performs.
3. Processor: Do Not Judge It Only by Clock Speed
The processor—or system-on-chip in most smartphones—affects general performance, graphics, camera processing, artificial-intelligence functions, mobile connectivity and energy efficiency.
For most consumers, the exact processor model is more useful than simply looking at a GHz figure.
A basic user does not need the fastest chip on the market. A gamer, video editor or person planning to keep a phone for many years may benefit more from a stronger processor.
When comparing processors, look for:
- the exact processor name;
- its generation;
- CPU performance;
- GPU or graphics capability;
- efficiency;
- heat management; and
- trusted real-world testing.
Buying advice: Do not pay flagship prices for processor power you will never use, but avoid extremely weak hardware if you intend to keep the phone for several years.
4. Cameras: Megapixels Do Not Tell the Whole Story
A 200-megapixel camera is not automatically better than a camera with a lower megapixel count.
Modern smartphone photography relies on several components working together. The image signal processor processes raw information from the camera sensor and handles areas including exposure, colour, focus and other image-processing tasks (Qualcomm, 2024).
Therefore, camera quality can depend on:
- sensor performance;
- lens quality;
- image processing;
- autofocus;
- optical or electronic stabilisation;
- low-light processing;
- colour handling;
- shutter response;
- video processing; and
- the quality of the different cameras fitted to the device.
Do not assume that having four rear camera circles means the phone has four excellent cameras either. Some low-cost devices include secondary sensors with limited usefulness.
If Camera Quality Matters
Look at real photographs and video samples from the exact model, preferably from several independent reviewers. Pay particular attention to indoor photos, night scenes, moving people, skin tones, video stabilisation and front-camera quality.
Opinion: For a photography-focused buyer, real camera samples are much more useful than choosing a phone based only on the megapixel figure printed in an advertisement.
5. Battery: A Bigger mAh Number Is Not the Complete Answer
Battery capacity is important, but battery capacity alone does not determine how long a phone will run.
Battery life is also affected by how the device is used. Apple, for example, distinguishes between battery life—how long the device operates between charges—and battery lifespan—how long the battery remains useful before replacement. Apple also notes that rechargeable lithium-ion batteries chemically age and gradually lose capacity and peak performance (Apple, 2026a).
In practice, battery performance is influenced by factors such as:
- screen brightness;
- processor efficiency;
- mobile signal strength;
- 4G/5G activity;
- gaming;
- GPS;
- video recording;
- background applications;
- temperature; and
- software optimisation.
For that reason, a well-optimised phone with a smaller battery can sometimes compete with a phone that has a larger battery on paper.
When buying, check real battery endurance tests, not only the mAh figure.
Used Phones
Battery condition becomes particularly important when buying second-hand devices. Rechargeable batteries wear with age and charging cycles. On supported iPhones, Apple provides battery-health information showing maximum capacity and peak-performance capability (Apple, 2026a).
For any used phone, check battery condition where possible and investigate the cost and availability of a replacement battery.
6. Charging: USB-C Does Not Automatically Mean Fast Charging
This is an area where consumers can easily misunderstand specifications.
USB Implementers Forum explains that USB Type-C refers to the connector. It does not automatically mean USB Power Delivery, USB 3.2 or USB4. Manufacturers can implement different power and data capabilities through a USB-C connector (USB Implementers Forum, 2023).
Therefore, before buying, check:
- maximum supported charging power;
- whether the charger is included;
- whether a specific charger is required;
- USB Power Delivery support;
- wireless charging, if important;
- charging time in independent testing; and
- USB data-transfer speed if you frequently transfer large videos or files.
Do not assume two USB-C phones charge or transfer data at the same speed.
7. Software Updates May Matter More Than One Extra Hardware Feature
Software support affects security, application compatibility and how long a phone can remain practical.
Android publishes regular security bulletins covering vulnerabilities and security patches. Google describes device updates as an important way of keeping Android users and devices protected (Android Open Source Project, 2026).
Update commitments vary greatly between manufacturers and even between models from the same company. For example, Google currently states that Pixel 8 and later Pixel phones receive seven years of operating-system and security updates from the date the device first became available through the U.S. Google Store (Google, 2026a).
That does not mean every Android phone receives seven years.
Before purchasing, search for the manufacturer’s official update policy for the exact model.
Questions to Ask
- How many operating-system upgrades are promised?
- How long are security updates promised?
- How frequently are security updates delivered?
- Has part of the promised support period already passed because the model is old?
- Is the manufacturer known to support inexpensive models as well as premium ones?
A heavily discounted three-year-old flagship may still be powerful, but its remaining software-support period can be shorter than that of a newer mid-range model.
8. Check Your Essential Apps Before You Buy
Do not assume that every smartphone can run every app.
Google states that applications on Google Play may not be compatible with every Android device. Compatibility can depend on factors including Android version, device design, carrier, location and other requirements (Google, n.d.-a).
This is especially important if you depend on:
- banking applications;
- WhatsApp or another messaging platform;
- mobile-money services;
- work applications;
- school applications;
- government applications;
- authentication apps;
- ride-hailing apps;
- delivery-driver apps;
- medical or health apps; or
- specialist business software.
Android buyers should also be cautious with unknown or imported devices. Google states that only Play Protect certified devices are eligible to include licensed Google applications such as Google Play, and certification indicates that the device passed Android compatibility testing (Google, n.d.-b).
For iPhones, apps are normally obtained through Apple’s App Store, subject to the applicable regional distribution rules (Apple, 2026b).
Buying rule: If one application is essential to your job, studies, money or communication, verify that application on the exact phone and operating-system version before paying.
9. 4G and 5G: The Network Must Actually Support the Phone
Seeing “5G” printed on a phone box does not guarantee perfect compatibility with every network in every country.
Phones support particular radio bands and technologies. Buyers of imported phones should especially verify compatibility with their local operator.
Another important issue is the gradual retirement of older 2G and 3G networks. GSMA guidance explains that when legacy networks are removed, devices without the necessary modern voice support can lose voice-service functionality. The guidance specifically discusses the role of IMS voice/VoLTE as operators transition away from 2G and 3G services (GSMA, 2026).
Before buying, verify:
- supported 4G bands;
- supported 5G bands where relevant;
- VoLTE compatibility;
- your operator’s approved-device requirements;
- dual-SIM or eSIM needs;
- roaming requirements; and
- whether the phone is locked to another network.
This is particularly important when buying a feature phone, an imported handset or an older used smartphone.
10. Feature Phones Are Still the Right Choice for Some People
Not everyone needs a smartphone.
A feature phone can be an excellent choice for someone who mainly wants:
- reliable calls;
- SMS;
- a physical keypad;
- straightforward operation;
- fewer distractions;
- basic mobile connectivity; or
- potentially longer time between charges because the device performs fewer demanding tasks.
However, do not buy an old 2G-only phone simply because it is inexpensive. Network closures mean that an older handset may eventually become unable to make normal calls in some locations. GSMA’s 2G/3G sunset guidance makes network compatibility an increasingly important consideration (GSMA, 2026).
A Better Feature-Phone Checklist
Look for:
- 4G support;
- VoLTE support confirmed for your network;
- readable keys;
- clear call quality;
- loud enough speaker;
- replaceable battery if that matters to you;
- charging-port type;
- emergency-contact functions; and
- any specific applications you require.
If WhatsApp, banking apps, Google Maps or other smartphone applications are essential, verify them first. Many simple feature phones are designed primarily for communication and will not provide the full Android or iPhone application experience.
11. Display Quality: Bigger Is Not Automatically Better
A very large screen can be useful for video, reading and gaming, but it also makes a phone larger and more difficult to use with one hand.
Consider:

A good display is one that remains comfortable and readable in the situations where you actually use the phone. A specification that looks impressive on paper is less important if the phone is uncomfortable to hold.
12. Water and Dust Resistance: Understand the IP Rating
Some smartphones advertise IP ratings such as IP67 or IP68.
The IP Code comes from the IEC 60529 standard, which classifies the degree of protection that an enclosure provides against external intrusion such as solids and water (International Electrotechnical Commission [IEC], 1989).
An IP rating should not be treated as a promise that the phone is indestructible or safe under every wet condition.
Check the exact manufacturer’s explanation of:
- water depth;
- test duration;
- freshwater versus other liquids;
- whether resistance can decrease with normal wear; and
- whether liquid damage is covered by the warranty.
A protective case can still be a sensible purchase even for a water-resistant phone.
13. Accessibility Can Be More Important Than Performance
A technically powerful phone can still be a poor choice if the owner cannot comfortably see, hear or operate it.
Android includes accessibility tools covering areas such as screen magnification, display and text adjustments, hearing-aid support, audio controls and voice-based interaction, although individual features can depend on the device and Android version (Google, n.d.-c).
iPhones also provide accessibility features for vision, hearing, mobility, speech and cognitive needs, including support for compatible hearing devices (Apple, n.d.).
If accessibility matters, test the phone personally where possible.
Check:
- text size;
- screen magnification;
- contrast;
- voice control;
- screen-reader support;
- vibration strength;
- speaker loudness;
- hearing-device compatibility;
- button placement; and
- whether the phone can be comfortably held and operated.
14. Build Quality, Repairs and Spare Parts
Premium glass and metal can feel expensive, but good ownership quality also includes what happens after the phone is damaged.
Before buying, ask:
- Is there an authorised repair centre nearby?
- Can the battery be replaced?
- Are screens available?
- What does a screen replacement cost?
- How long is the warranty?
- Who provides warranty service?
- Are spare parts easily available?
- Does the seller provide a genuine local warranty?
- Will importing the device affect service?
For a phone you plan to keep for several years, repair support can be more valuable than a minor specification advantage.
15. Be Careful With Used and Refurbished Phones
Used phones can provide excellent value, but they require more checks.
Inspect:
- battery condition;
- screen damage;
- cameras;
- microphones;
- loudspeakers;
- charging port;
- Wi-Fi;
- Bluetooth;
- mobile network;
- fingerprint reader or face recognition;
- buttons;
- SIM tray;
- water-damage signs where visible;
- repair history;
- software-update eligibility; and
- whether the phone is still attached to the previous owner’s account.
A cheap used phone can become expensive if it immediately needs a new screen and battery.
Also verify the device identifier through appropriate legitimate channels where available and make sure the handset has not been reported lost, stolen or blocked.
16. Do Not Buy a Specification You Do Not Understand
Some common advertising traps include focusing on one impressive number while ignoring everything else.

USB-IF’s own guidance is a good example of why buyers should look beyond labels: a USB-C connector does not by itself guarantee USB Power Delivery, USB 3.2 or USB4 capability (USB Implementers Forum, 2023).
A Simple Phone-Buying Checklist
Before paying for a phone, answer these questions:
- What are the five main things I will use this phone for?
- Can it run every application I consider essential?
- Does it work properly with my mobile network?
- Does it support VoLTE if my network requires it?
- How much physical RAM does it have?
- Is the storage enough for my future use?
- Can storage be expanded if I need that?
- How long will the manufacturer provide security updates?
- How good is the processor for my intended use?
- How does the battery perform in independent tests?
- Does it support the charging system I want?
- Are the cameras actually good, not merely high in megapixels?
- Is the screen readable outdoors?
- Is the phone comfortable to hold?
- Does it have the accessibility features required by the user?
- Is there reliable warranty and repair support?
- How expensive is a screen or battery replacement?
- If it is used, what condition is the battery in?
- If it is imported, will local network bands, apps and warranty still work?
- Am I paying for features I will actually use?

Final Thoughts
A good mobile phone is not the one with the longest specification sheet. It is the phone that matches the owner’s needs without creating unnecessary problems.
For most smartphone buyers, the most important combination is sufficient performance, enough RAM and storage, reliable battery life, required applications, network compatibility, good software support and dependable repair service.
For people who mainly make calls and send text messages, a modern 4G feature phone may still be the better choice. The key requirement is to ensure that it supports the technologies used by the local mobile network, particularly as 2G and 3G services continue to be retired in different markets (GSMA, 2026).
Consumers usually make better buying decisions when they first decide what the phone must do and then compare specifications. Starting with advertisements, brand loyalty or the largest numbers can lead to paying for features that provide little real benefit.
The most important question is therefore not “Which phone has the biggest specifications?”
It is “Which phone has the right specifications, software, support and features for the way I will actually use it?”
