    Accredited Universities in Ghana
Image used for representational purposes only

Ghana has a growing and well-structured tertiary education sector. All universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions in the country are required by law to be accredited before they can legally operate or award any qualifications. The body responsible for this is the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, commonly known as GTEC.

GTEC was established under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), which merged the former National Accreditation Board (NAB) and the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) into a single body. The Act received presidential assent on 21 August 2020, and GTEC’s Governing Board was inaugurated on 25 November 2020.

Under Section 36(1) of Act 1023, it is a criminal offence to operate a tertiary institution or run a tertiary programme that has not been accredited. Penalties include heavy fines, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both. This makes it very important for students, employers, and the public to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling or accepting qualifications.

This article provides a complete and factual list of all accredited tertiary institutions in Ghana as published on the official GTEC website (gtec.edu.gh), organised by category. The list includes public universities, chartered private universities, technical universities, private tertiary colleges, colleges of education, nursing training colleges, tutorial colleges, and other recognised institutions.

About the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)

GTEC is the national regulatory body for tertiary education in Ghana. It is responsible for:

    • Granting accreditation to institutions and their individual programmes
    • Evaluating academic credentials
    • Ensuring quality assurance in higher education
    • Providing training and regulatory guidance to institutions
    • Publishing and maintaining the official list of accredited institutions

GTEC classifies tertiary institutions into distinct categories. Each category has its own accreditation standards, and institutions within each category are either fully chartered, affiliated to a parent university, or registered under specific conditions. Both institution-level and programme-level accreditation are required.

    1. Public Universities (Traditional Universities)

Public universities are government-funded institutions that are fully chartered to award their own degrees, diplomas, and certificates. They offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across a wide range of disciplines. Ghana currently has 16 public universities.

    2. Chartered Private Tertiary Institutions

Chartered private tertiary institutions are privately owned universities that have been granted full charter status by the Government of Ghana. A chartered institution is authorised to award its own degrees independently, without being affiliated to any public university. Ghana currently has 24 chartered private tertiary institutions.

The original 10 institutions received their charters at various points between 2002 and 2022. On 19 December 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted Presidential Charters to 14 additional private university colleges at a ceremony held at Jubilee House, Accra, bringing the total to 24.

They award both Higher National Diplomas (HND) and bachelor’s degrees in technical and applied fields. Ghana has 10 public technical universities.

    4. Private Tertiary Institutions Offering HND/Degree Programmes

Their programmes lead to degrees or HND certificates awarded by the affiliated parent university. GTEC grants each institution a specific accreditation period, after which renewal is required.

    10. How to Verify an Institution’s Accreditation

Before enrolling in any tertiary institution in Ghana, prospective students are strongly advised to verify that both the institution and the specific programme they wish to study are properly accredited by GTEC. The information in this article is for general reference only. Accreditation statuses change — institutions are added, renewed, or lapsed on a regular basis.

For real-time, up-to-date accreditation status of any institution, always visit the official GTEC website directly:

    https://gtec.edu.gh/institution-category

It is also important to note that even if an institution is accredited, the specific programme you are enrolling in must carry its own valid programme-level accreditation. GTEC accredits both institutions and individual programmes separately.

    11. Important Notes for Students

    1. Always check both institution accreditation AND programme accreditation before enrolling. Accreditation has expiry dates. An institution listed as ‘Expired’ on the GTEC site means its accreditation period has lapsed and has not yet been renewed. Verify directly with GTEC.
    2. Accreditation statuses change regularly. An institution that was accredited at the time this article was written may have since had its accreditation lapse (expired) or renewed. Always verify current status in real time at gtec.edu.gh/institution-category.
    3. Study centres and satellite campuses used by universities must be separately accredited by GTEC. Studying at an unaccredited centre may mean your certificate will not be recognised.
    4. It is a criminal offence under Act 1023 to operate an unaccredited tertiary institution in Ghana. Penalties include fines and imprisonment of up to 20 years.
    5. This article reflects data retrieved from the GTEC website at the time of writing and is intended for general informational purposes only.

    Conclusion

Ghana’s tertiary education sector is one of the most regulated and structured in West Africa. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission plays a vital role in ensuring that all universities and colleges meet the required standards for academic quality and governance. With 16 public universities, 24 chartered private institutions, 10 technical universities, 95 private tertiary colleges, 48 public colleges of education, and dozens of nursing training colleges spread across every region of the country, Ghana offers a wide and diverse range of accredited tertiary education options.

Whether you are a student choosing an institution, an employer verifying qualifications, or a researcher studying Ghana’s education sector, the GTEC accreditation list at gtec.edu.gh is the only authoritative source. Always verify the current accreditation status directly through GTEC before making important decisions.
