In 2018, a woman lost $7,732 in one of the most unfortunate payment errors ever recorded at a café. Olesja Schemjakowa, a Russian national living in France, was visiting Zurich, Switzerland, when she decided to grab a bite at a local spot called New Point Café. What happened next would leave her stunned.
Olesja paid for her meal, which cost around $23. But while entering what she thought was a modest tip, she mistakenly typed her card’s PIN number into the terminal’s tip field. Instead of tipping a few dollars, the system processed her PIN as a CHF 7,732 (about $7,732 USD) gratuity.
Realizing the error, she contacted the café for a refund. At first, the management assured her that the money would be returned. But days passed, and nothing happened. Soon after, she learned that the café had filed for bankruptcy. The owner stopped responding, and her attempts to recover the money hit a wall.
Olesja turned to her bank for help, but was told that the transaction couldn’t be reversed. Since it wasn’t fraud or unauthorized use, there was no legal or financial recourse. Authorities also declined to investigate, stating no crime had occurred.
Despite the public sympathy she received, the odds of reclaiming her funds were close to zero. As she told Swiss media, the mistake was simple but the consequences were huge.
This case highlights how a tiny error in digital payments can lead to lasting consequences, especially when systems fail to protect users from honest mistake.
