Who is Jamiu Opeyemi Akamo: He’s not a label, but he’s helping artists win like one

In a music industry where major labels often control the spotlight, a quiet revolution is being led behind the scenes by people like Jamiu Opeyemi Akamo through his marketing company, Purple Canopy. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Akamo is a music marketing service provider whose mission is simple but powerful: to give every artist a fair shot at being heard, with or without a deal.

Akamo’s work is the kind that doesn’t scream for attention but delivers undeniable results. With more than 2,000 successful music campaigns completed, and a growing network of collaborators, he is quickly becoming one of the most trusted names in African music marketing.

    A mission rooted in accessibility

His journey began with a love for distributing and making music, but it was never just about the product. It was about access — the kind of access many independent artists across Africa rarely get.

“To give every artist the actual opportunity to get heard,” Akamo says. That’s been his focus from day one.

That focus has led to big wins, including an ambassador deal with a respected distribution company, and his upcoming partnership with Apprise Music.

    Strategy over hype

In a digital era flooded with content, Akamo has built his edge through strategic thinking and artist-centered marketing. His approach is rooted in understanding each artist’s goals and aligning campaigns to match those goals, not chasing empty virality.

“My approach is alignment with what the artist, label, or management wants,” he says. “Then we do our best in getting them what they want.”

That clarity has helped him secure projects under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with notable clients, and has shaped some of the most unique campaigns behind rising African acts.

TikTok, trends, and what’s working now

One of the biggest shifts Akamo has noticed is the central role of TikTok in music marketing. From breaking unknown singles to boosting streaming numbers, the platform is now a key player in the strategies he builds.

But even as he leans into new tools and trends, Akamo stays true to his core belief — that success should be accessible. He’s not genre-focused. What matters is whether the sound has potential and whether the artist is committed.

Building Africa’s biggest music marketing company

Akamo’s goal isn’t small. He wants to build Africa’s largest music marketing company — a space where creatives can thrive on their own terms. He envisions an ecosystem where artists don’t need the backing of a major label to succeed.

“Giving creatives tools to be as big as they want without necessarily having to be affiliated with a major,” he says. It’s a bold vision, but one he’s backing with real action.

His biggest inspirations? Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment — not just for their scale, but for what he believes is possible when strategy meets structure.

    Advice for the next wave

To young creatives, marketers, and dreamers, his message is clear: “Keep going and never give up. It could be today or tomorrow.”

In an industry often driven by fast wins and flashy headlines, Jamiu Opeyemi Akamo is building something far more lasting, a system where real talent gets heard, no shortcuts needed.
