Shatta Wale Calls on Ghana’s Youth to Back President Mahama

During the electrifying President’s Cup match at the Accra Sports Stadium, dancehall powerhouse Shatta Wale delivered a powerful political plea. He asked Ghana’s youth to rally behind President John Mahama’s government. His exact words: “From now till the next election, support this government. If you are a youth and you want to see money in your pocket, then support this government because it has come to put money in your pocket.”

Shatta Wale didn’t stop there. On social media, he praised Mahama’s leadership, calling him a president who rewards hard work with a smile—and “can also terminate your contract if you don’t deliver.” He thanked both the president and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for involving the Shatta Movement Empire in the day’s celebrations.

Unsurprisingly, the endorsement sparked heated debate. Some called it a genuine call for unity and progress, while others criticized Shatta Wale for blending entertainment with politics. Political expert Kwame Antwi-Danso warned that celebrity endorsements can sway young voters—but urged them to back policies, not personalities.

Still, fans flooded social media with praise. Many saw Shatta Wale’s message as a rallying cry for economic opportunity. A 20-year-old fan told Africanews that Wale had “spoke the truth. The youth must back policies that bring real change.”

This move underscores a growing trend: Ghanaian artists stepping into political conversations. In this case, Shatta Wale used his platform for something bigger. He performed pro bono at the event, personally covering production costs—“a patriotic gesture,” according to the Youth Ministry.

Whether fans agree or not, the moment highlights how music, influence, and politics can intersect. As Ghana nears its next election cycle, voices like Shatta Wale’s will shape the tone of youth engagement. His message was clear: support leaders whose actions promise to improve daily life. The question now is whether that call will translate into meaningful support at the polls.
