Lebanon celebrates its Independence Day on 22 November every year. Unlike festivals that follow the Moon, such as Chhath or Eid, this date never moves on the calendar, so only the weekday changes.
This article lists the date and weekday for every year from 2026 to 2125, explains what 22 November actually marks, and separates documented history from popular shortcuts.
Quick answer
- Lebanese Independence Day is on 22 November every year [1, 2].
- In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 22 November, which is the 83rd anniversary of the 1943 events [1].
- It is a public holiday, and non-essential government offices, schools and businesses are closed or run reduced hours [1].
- The date marks the day France released Lebanon’s president, prime minister and other officials from detention in 1943, not the day the French Mandate was cancelled on paper [3].
- Across 2026 to 2125, the date falls on every weekday, with Sunday, Monday and Thursday each appearing in 15% of the years (our own calendar calculation).
Why the date never changes
Lebanon uses the Gregorian calendar (the standard 365-day calendar used worldwide) for its national day, so 22 November stays fixed [2]. Only the weekday changes. The weekday moves forward by one day in a normal year and by two days after a leap year, which is why the table below changes from year to year. This weekday pattern is our own calendar calculation.
By contrast, a national day set by law can be moved by a new law. Oman, for example, changed its National Day from 18 November to 20 and 21 November through a royal decree in 2025 [4]. Morocco moved its independence celebration from 2 March to 18 November in the early 1960s [5]. We found no sign that Lebanon plans a change, so the 22 November date is treated here as permanent.
What 22 November actually marks
Lebanon was placed under a French Mandate (a period when a foreign power governs a territory on behalf of the international community) in 1920, after the Ottoman Empire collapsed [2]. That rule lasted 23 years [2].
In 1941 a French general proclaimed Lebanon’s independence on behalf of the Free French government, and several countries recognized it, but France still kept exercising authority [3]. Elections were held in 1943, and the new parliament elected Bishara al Khuri as president on 21 September 1943 [3].
On 8 November 1943 the parliament amended the constitution to remove the articles that referred to the Mandate, which unilaterally ended it [3]. The French authorities answered by arresting the president, the prime minister and other cabinet members and holding them in the castle at Rashayya [3]. This united Christian and Muslim leaders against French control [3].
Growing pressure from inside Lebanon and from Britain, the United States and Arab countries led France to release the prisoners on 22 November 1943, and that day has been celebrated as Independence Day since then [3, 2].
A timeline you can check
- 1920: Lebanon is placed under the French Mandate [2].
- 26 November 1941: France’s delegate general proclaims Lebanese independence, but French authority continues [3].
- 8 November 1943: Parliament cancels the Mandate articles in the constitution [3].
- 22 November 1943: The imprisoned Lebanese leaders are released [3].
- 31 December 1946: French troops finish leaving Lebanon [2].
The 1943 political settlement is known as the National Pact, an unwritten agreement between the two leading Christian and Muslim leaders, Khuri and al Solh [3]. It said Lebanon would be fully independent, would keep ties with both the Arab world and the West, and would share public offices among religious groups [3].

Patterns in the 100-year list
Over these 100 years the date falls on Sunday, Monday and Thursday in 15% of years each. Wednesday, Tuesday and Saturday each get 14%, and Friday gets 13%. It lands on a Saturday or Sunday in 29% of the years. The year 2100 is not a leap year in the Gregorian calendar, so the weekday moves by only one day that year, from Sunday in 2099 to Monday in 2100. These figures are our own calendar calculation.
If a holiday falls on a weekend, some businesses may follow weekend hours instead of treating it as a day off, as they may in 2026 when it falls on a Sunday [1]. Whether the government gives a replacement day off would be decided by Lebanese authorities each year, and we did not find a rule for that.
How Lebanon marks the day
Typical celebrations include military parades, the display of the Lebanese flag, fireworks, concerts and general celebration of Lebanese heritage [2]. People also attend rallies and speeches, and the flag is raised across the country [1].
Many Lebanese people abroad also mark the day, so you will often see events in other countries around 22 November. Because the date is fixed, event organisers can plan years ahead, but the weekday still decides whether a celebration is held on the day itself or on the nearest weekend.
Myths vs facts
| Claim | Verdict | What the evidence says |
|---|---|---|
| Lebanese Independence Day is on 22 November every year | True | The date is fixed and has been celebrated since the 1943 release of the leaders [2, 3]. |
| The date changes every year like a lunar festival | Myth | Only the weekday changes, because the date follows the Gregorian calendar [2]. |
| 22 November is the day the French Mandate was cancelled on paper | Myth | Parliament cancelled the Mandate articles on 8 November 1943 [3]. |
| 22 November is the day France released the arrested Lebanese leaders | True | The prisoners at Rashayya were released on 22 November 1943 [3]. |
| French troops left Lebanon on 22 November 1943 | Myth | French troops finished leaving on 31 December 1946 [2, 3]. |
| Lebanon’s independence was first proclaimed in 1943 | Myth | A French general proclaimed it on 26 November 1941, though France kept exercising authority [3]. |
| The 1943 arrests brought Christian and Muslim leaders together | True | The arrests united Christian and Muslim opinion against the Mandate [2, 3]. |
| The National Pact was a written law | Myth | It was an unwritten agreement between two leaders [3]. |
| The holiday will never move to a different date | Unproven | Other countries have moved their national days by law [4, 5], and we found no plan to change Lebanon’s date. |
Bottom line
Lebanese Independence Day is 22 November every year, so the next 100 dates from 2026 to 2125 differ only by weekday, starting with Sunday in 2026 and ending with Thursday in 2125. The date marks the 1943 release of Lebanon’s leaders, not the cancellation of the Mandate on 8 November 1943 or the final French withdrawal in 1946. A future law could change the date, as has happened in Oman and Morocco, but nothing we found suggests that is planned.
