Judge Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge known worldwide for his empathy, has passed away at the age of 88. His family confirmed his death after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Judge Frank Caprio will be remembered for bringing compassion and fairness to every case he handled.

For nearly forty years, Caprio served as a municipal judge in Providence. His courtroom was different from most. Instead of focusing only on punishment, he often listened carefully to defendants’ personal stories. This approach earned him praise and respect. It also led to his television show, Caught in Providence, which showcased his fair and kind decisions.

Through short clips online, viewers saw Caprio dismissing tickets and fines for people facing difficult circumstances. In one viral clip, he excused a 96-year-old man caring for his sick son. Another showed him helping a student with a financial burden. These moments highlighted his unique style and earned him fans worldwide.

Caprio’s rise to fame coincided with the growth of social media. TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram spread his videos rapidly. Audiences appreciated his humor, empathy, and human approach to justice. Through his actions, Caprio proved that courts could be both fair and understanding.

In 2023, Caprio revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Even while ill, he thanked supporters and remained engaged with his audience. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called him a “Rhode Island treasure” and ordered flags to fly at half-staff in his honor.

Judge Frank Caprio leaves behind his wife, five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy continues to inspire judges, lawyers, and ordinary people to treat others with fairness and humanity. His work reminds us that justice is strongest when combined with empathy.
