Dela Jackson: The afro-rock storyteller creating waves from Ghana’s Volta Region

    Dela Jackson

Dela Jackson is not your typical artist. His music doesn’t scream for attention—it gently pulls you in. Born Jackson Delali Kwaokumey in Anloga, a coastal town in Ghana’s Volta Region, Dela has carved a unique path in the music world through a calming, mid-tempo afro-rock fusion that is as reflective as it is powerful.

While many artists chase virality, Dela’s journey is grounded in purpose. “Music found me in church,” he shares. That spark, ignited in 1986, has grown into a sound that blends African heritage with soulful storytelling.

Rooted in rhythm, raised in simplicity

Dela’s music isn’t just heard—it’s felt. Influenced by African music icons like Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, and Manu Dibango, he crafts songs that echo authenticity and emotional depth. His sound is shaped as much by his roots as it is by his personal calm. There’s no noise or gimmick here—just rhythm, soul, and meaning.

The journey of a self-taught creative

Like many artists, Dela has faced the grind: inconsistent bookings, limited support, and financial challenges. But rather than let these obstacles define him, he evolved. He became a multi-instrumentalist, immersed himself in music education, and began teaching others.

“I usually create music while playing an instrument or in silence,” he explains. That inward, focused process has helped him shape a genre he proudly calls afro-rock fusion—a blend of West African groove, jazz sensibility, and raw storytelling.

A quiet legacy, built one note at a time

Dela has released four full-length albums, each born from a desire to step into his own light after years of supporting bands and backing acts. One of his career highlights? Collaborating with Grammy-nominated reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, contributing to four of Dawuni’s early albums and performing with him on stages across Côte d’Ivoire.

While the award shelves may still be empty, his resume is anything but. His music has become a tool for spreading joy, love, and reflection, with the dream that it someday graces film soundtracks, brand campaigns, and global concerts.

Looking ahead: more music, more reach

Dela is currently back in the studio, preparing new singles scheduled for release before the end of the year. With every note, he inches closer to his dream of taking his sound to audiences across continents.

“I want my music to travel—to heal, inspire, and connect,” he says.

More than music: A way of life

Outside of performance, Dela lives a life of introspection. He reads, spends time by the ocean, and finds creativity in stillness. These personal rituals feed into the richness of his sound.

His advice to the next generation of musicians? “Start with passion. Learn the craft. Don’t put money first.” It’s a perspective that defines not only his music but his entire journey.
