Eventually every artiste must leave their label

Richie Mensah discussing why an artiste must leave their label
Richie Mensah, CEO of Lynx Group

Richie Mensah, CEO of Lynx Group and founder of Lynx Entertainment, recently offered a clear perspective: an artiste must leave their label eventually. Addressing the nature of partnerships between musicians and record labels, he emphasized that the music business, like any relationship, evolves—and ending one phase doesn’t mean severing ties.

Richie compares these professional relationships to marriages—some last a lifetime, while others reach a natural conclusion. In his words: “Every artiste, whether the label likes it or not, will have to leave” Modern Ghana. He argues this transition is healthy. Holding onto an artiste beyond their growth phase can stall both the songwriter and the label.

Drawing from his own experience, Richie noted that as a musician rises, they become more self-sufficient:

“You help the person to a point… At that point, it’s now up to them if they want to keep continuing with support or they want to find their own path” MyJoyOnline.

Despite acknowledging the emotional challenge—especially when he thought there was still more to do—Richie accepts departures as part of the industry’s natural cycle. He was candid, saying departures “hurt him,” but stressed it’s crucial for labels to respect an artiste’s growth and right to choose.

Over the years, Lynx Entertainment has launched major talents like KiDi, Kuami Eugene, MzVee, and Asem. Some have moved on, others remain, demonstrating that a well-managed label relationship can adapt, even post-contract.

This mindset supports a healthy creative ecosystem. When an artiste exits label support, it doesn’t erase past collaborations—it opens the door to new partnerships, solo growth, and continued mutual respect. As Richie puts it, the key is building bonds that don’t end when contracts do: “it’s better to build a strong relationship so that even if the artiste leaves, there’s still a connection”.
