Once it reaches a refinery, it is broken apart into fuels that move vehicles and aircraft, and into raw chemical building blocks that eventually turn into plastics, fabrics, medicines, and hundreds of other everyday goods. Fuels get most of the attention, but a meaningful slice of every barrel, along with a portion of natural gas, becomes petrochemical feedstock rather than fuel. Naphtha, ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, and xylene are among the basic building block chemicals extracted during refining, and each becomes the starting point for a distinct manufacturing chain [4, 5]. There are reportedly more than 6,000 everyday products that trace back to crude oil and natural gas liquids in some form, once you count every downstream chemical and material [5, 6].
A single barrel’s petrochemical share can realistically end up as:
Plastics and packaging: milk jugs, food wrap, bottles, plastic bags, and the casings of household electronics all begin as petrochemical resins such as polyethylene and polypropylene [4, 7].
Synthetic fibres and textiles: polyester, nylon, acrylic, and rayon in clothing, carpets, and upholstery are derived from petroleum-based chemicals rather than natural fibres [4, 7].
Personal care and cosmetics: many lotions, shampoos, lipsticks, foundations, deodorants, and perfumes rely on petroleum-derived ingredients as a base or carrier [4, 7].
Medical and pharmaceutical products: aspirin, antihistamines, IV bags, syringes, artificial limbs, contact lenses, and hearing aids commonly involve petrochemical components or packaging [4, 7].
