Thousands of fans gathered at Independence Square in Accra to honour legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba. The candlelight vigil, held on August 2, 2025, was organised by the Creative Arts Agency. It was a peaceful and heartfelt event to celebrate his life, music, and legacy.

Attendees arrived early, dressed in black, holding candles and singing along to some of his most popular songs like Aben Wɔ Ha, Sika Asem, and Ɛyɛ N’adom. The air was calm, yet filled with emotion as fans remembered the man who shaped highlife music in Ghana.

The vigil lasted from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. It featured musical tributes, spoken word, and short speeches by fellow artists, cultural leaders, and fans. Many praised Daddy Lumba for his role in modernising highlife and connecting with generations through timeless lyrics.

The Daddy Lumba candlelight vigil didn’t only happen in Accra. Similar gatherings took place in Kumasi, Takoradi, and across the diaspora. Fans in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States also held their own tributes, proving the global reach of his influence.

This event followed the opening of a book of condolence at his residence on July 29. His death on July 26, at the age of 60, shocked fans nationwide.

For many, the vigil was not just about mourning. It was a chance to celebrate a man whose music was the soundtrack to their lives. People of all ages stood side by side, lighting candles and singing his songs with pride.

The candlelight vigil offered a moment of unity, respect, and reflection — a fitting farewell to a true icon of Ghanaian music.
