The 2023 Capitation Grant arrears have been released to District Education Directorates for onward payment to public basic schools across Ghana.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) announced the release in a letter dated September 14, 2026.
The letter was addressed to all Regional Directors of Education.
GES directs districts to release funds
According to GES, the money has already been transferred to the accounts of the various District Education Directorates.
The districts are expected to send the funds to the schools before the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.
GES said the move would help heads of basic schools prepare for the new academic term.
The Service also urged Regional Directors to ensure that the process is completed without delay.
Sports and Culture funds included
GES explained that the district transfers include the Sports and Culture allocation meant for District Offices.
However, the Regional Sports and Culture funds were sent separately to designated accounts belonging to the Regional Offices.
The clarification is intended to help education authorities manage the different components of the released funds.
GES to monitor disbursement
The Ghana Education Service said a monitoring team from its headquarters would visit the regions.
The team will assess how the funds are transferred and distributed to schools.
Regional authorities have therefore been asked to ensure that the money reaches the intended beneficiaries on time.
Grant supports public basic schools
The Capitation Grant helps public basic schools meet some of their operational needs.
It also forms part of efforts to reduce financial barriers to basic education.
GES did not disclose the total amount released or the specific allocation for each district.
The immediate task is now to ensure that schools receive the arrears before the new academic year begins.
