Zipowei returns with honesty and heart on her debut EP Echoes of Zi

Three years after her breakout single Freefalling in 2022, Nigerian singer-songwriter Zipowei has returned — not with noise, but with quiet conviction. Her new EP, Echoes of Zi, is more than a collection of songs. It’s a reintroduction to an artist who stepped away from the spotlight to rediscover her purpose.

Zipowei’s absence wasn’t accidental. “Sometimes silence isn’t absence; it’s preparation,” she says. Those three years were spent questioning, healing, and rebuilding her relationship with music. The result is an intimate project that reflects every phase of that journey — from vulnerability and exhaustion to joy, faith, and love.

“I realized authenticity isn’t just a buzzword,” Zipowei shares. “It’s the only way I create now. Echoes of Zi is proof that you can step away, grow in the dark, and come back stronger.”

    Finding her voice again

Echoes of Zi was recorded far from the typical studio environment. No big teams, no grand production — just Zi, her collaborators, and raw emotion. “We captured real moments,” she says. “The breaths between words, the imperfections, the spontaneous ideas that became the soul of each song.”

The project’s core lesson? Sometimes the best art happens when you stop overthinking and simply press record.

    The stories behind the songs

    RAW – The unguarded beginning
Zipowei opens the EP with RAW, a deeply personal introduction that wasn’t written in advance. “I just pressed record and said whatever came out,” she recalls. The track feels like a window into her thoughts before the story unfolds — short, stripped down, and vulnerable.

    PARTY BOY – Playful complexity
This song brings levity and allure. Beneath its flirty surface lies a reflection on curiosity, attraction, and the tension between confidence and vulnerability. “It’s about being seen in a room full of noise,” Zipowei explains.

STUCK ON YOU – The honeymoon feeling
A light, dreamy track that captures the rush of falling in love. “It’s that magnetic phase where logic doesn’t matter,” Zipowei says. “It’s butterflies, surrender, and the thrill of being consumed by someone’s presence.”

BURNT OUT – The breaking point
One of the EP’s most emotional moments, Burnt Out explores exhaustion and the fear of appearing weak. “It’s about admitting you can’t do it all,” Zipowei says. “And finding peace in that honesty.” Heavy yet healing, the song becomes both confession and prayer.

SUNDAY MORNING BLUES – Redefining spirituality
Closing the project, Zipowei recalls her unconventional childhood Sundays — peaceful mornings of reflection, music, and self-care. “That was my version of church,” she says. “Peace doesn’t always look traditional.”

    The echo room experience

To mark the release, Zipowei hosted The Echo Room, an intimate listening session with 30 fans gathered on cushions in a circle. They played the EP from start to finish — smiles during Party Boy, tears during Burnt Out. It wasn’t an industry event; it was community. “That night reminded me that music is meant to be experienced together,” Zipowei says.

    Redefining success

Sonically, Echoes of Zi sits between alternative R&B, Afro-soul, and introspective pop — blending Nigerian rhythms with smooth, modern textures. But beyond sound, Zipowei’s message is one of balance and self-preservation.

“Echoes of Zi is about choosing mental health over momentum,” she explains. “About returning when you’re ready, not when the algorithm says you should.”

Zipowei isn’t chasing virality or chart placements. She’s building sustainability and meaning. Future plans include visual projects, live performances, and collaborations with like-minded artists. More importantly, she wants to create spaces like The Echo Room, where authenticity is celebrated.

“The break taught me my worth isn’t tied to productivity,” she says. “This is my truth right now — imperfect, vulnerable, honest. These songs are echoes that will keep reverberating wherever they’re needed.”

And just like that, the echoes of Zi have begun.
