Security guard remanded over alleged murder of an elderly couple in Asylum Down, Accra. The Adabraka District Court placed the suspect into police custody after hearing preliminary details.
The court identified the suspect as 32-year-old Abraham Newton Awundok. Prosecutors accuse him of killing 80-year-old Dr. Jesse Amuah and his 64-year-old wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Esi Amuah.
Details of the Asylum Down Murder Case
Awundok worked as a private security guard across the street from the victims. He established a friendly relationship with the couple in January 2026. Shortly after, he began performing small domestic tasks around their house for extra money.
However, a serious disagreement occurred on March 22, 2026, over payment. Awundok requested cash for his work. Instead, Mrs. Amuah gave him toothpaste and deodorant. Awundok accepted the items, but tension grew between them.
The situation escalated dramatically the following morning. Awundok returned to complete his chores and requested GH¢1,500. When Mrs. Amuah refused, Awundok confronted her about her attitude.
Mrs. Amuah responded with harsh words. Consequently, Awundok became angry and attacked her repeatedly on the head with a heavy wooden pestle.
Dr. Amuah tried to intervene during the assault. However, Awundok attacked the retired doctor with a kitchen knife, a pestle, and a concrete block. Both victims died at the scene from severe trauma.
Concealment of Crime and Arrest in Dubai
Awundok took fast steps to cover up the crime. He fled initially in the couple’s car with their cash, mobile phones, and valuables.
However, he returned to the compound the next evening to clean the area. He wrapped the bodies in curtains and sacks. Then, he dumped the remains inside the compound’s septic tank.
Additionally, he threw his bloody clothes into the tank and sealed it with cement. He later gave the stolen car to his sister for commercial taxi use.
Awundok fled Ghana for Dubai on April 22, 2026. Meanwhile, worried relatives reported the missing couple to the police on April 30.
Police officers searched the house and found the remains inside the septic tank. An autopsy on May 7 confirmed severe head trauma as the cause of death.
International security agencies tracked Awundok to Dubai. Consequently, authorities extradited him back to Ghana on August 30, 2026.
During interrogation, Awundok admitted to the crime and expressed deep remorse. The court adjourned the case to September 21, 2026, while investigations continue.
