Petrol price may hit GH¢16.26 in the next pricing window as global crude oil prices rise, according to a projection by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).
The expected increase could take effect from September 16, 2026, with COPEC also projecting a sharper rise for diesel. The chamber’s forecast points to higher prices for motorists and other fuel users during the next pricing period.
COPEC expects petrol to rise by 4.24 percent to about GH¢16.26 per litre. Diesel, meanwhile, is projected to increase by 10.23 percent to approximately GH¢19.07 per litre.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is also expected to become more expensive. COPEC has estimated a price of about GH¢15.32 per kilogramme for the next pricing window.
Petrol price projection follows rise in crude oil
COPEC said the projected increases are linked mainly to developments in the international oil market.
In its pricing projection dated September 13, 2026, the chamber said international crude oil prices rose from US$89.30 to US$103.07 per barrel during the period under review.
That movement represents a significant increase in the cost of crude oil. As a result, the higher international price is expected to put pressure on domestic petroleum prices in the coming window.
The projection comes despite a marginal appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.
According to COPEC, the average interbank exchange rate improved from GH¢11.5166 to GH¢11.4830 per US$1. The chamber described this as a marginal 0.29 percent appreciation of the cedi.
Petrol costs rise despite cedi appreciation
The movement in the petrol price is also reflected in the international Free on Board (FOB) price of the product.
COPEC said the international FOB price of petrol increased from US$1,136.50 to US$1,251.07 per metric tonne during the period under review.
The rise in the international benchmark helps explain why petrol prices are expected to increase even though the local currency recorded a marginal improvement against the dollar.
For consumers, the key figure in the projection is the expected petrol price of GH¢16.26 per litre. Diesel users could face an even larger percentage increase, with the projected price reaching GH¢19.07 per litre.
Diesel and LPG also expected to rise
The projected change is not limited to petrol.
COPEC expects diesel to record a 10.23 percent increase in the next pricing window. If the projection materialises, diesel could reach approximately GH¢19.07 per litre.
LPG is also expected to rise to about GH¢15.32 per kilogramme.
The three projections show that the expected movement in international oil prices could affect different petroleum products at the same time.
The figures remain COPEC projections for the next pricing window. The chamber’s forecast therefore points to a possible increase in fuel costs, with petrol and diesel recording notable upward movements.
For now, the most notable change in the forecast is the expected movement of petrol to GH¢16.26 per litre and diesel to GH¢19.07 per litre as the new pricing window approaches.
