How an elderly man used chocolates to steal €21 million in Belgium’s Antwerp diamond heist

In the world of high-profile crimes, few heists have demonstrated the power of psychological manipulation as strikingly as the diamond robbery that stunned Belgium in 2007. An elderly man, under the guise of affability and trustworthiness, managed to steal €21 million worth of diamonds from a high-security bank in Antwerp’s diamond district—vanishing without a trace.

    A Calculated Act of Deception

The suspect, using the alias Carlos Hector Flomenbaum, spent months cultivating relationships with the staff of the ABN Amro Bank. By frequently visiting the bank, offering small gifts such as chocolates, and maintaining a courteous and familiar presence, he earned the trust of employees who eventually granted him VIP access to the bank’s vault area (The Independent, 2007).

    The Execution of the Heist

In early March 2007, leveraging his privileged access, the individual entered the vault after hours without suspicion. He proceeded to systematically remove diamonds stored in five safe-deposit boxes. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated between €21 million and €28 million, amounting to over 120,000 carats (Listverse, 2018).

The heist was executed without any forced entry or immediate alarm, underscoring how carefully crafted social engineering can bypass even sophisticated security systems. By the time bank officials discovered the theft, the man known as Flomenbaum had disappeared without leaving any immediate leads.

    The Elusive “Flomenbaum”

Subsequent investigations revealed that the thief operated under a stolen Israeli passport in the name of Carlos Hector Flomenbaum. He was described as speaking with an American accent while claiming Argentine nationality. His real identity remains unknown, and despite an Interpol red notice, neither the perpetrator nor the stolen diamonds have been recovered (The Register, 2007).

Security Lessons from the Antwerp Heist

This high-profile case highlights the critical importance of addressing human factors in security protocols. While technological measures may be robust, social engineering and manipulation can still represent significant vulnerabilities. Financial institutions, particularly those handling high-value assets, must ensure rigorous background checks, controlled access, and ongoing vigilance against insider manipulation.

    Conclusion

The 2007 Antwerp diamond heist remains one of the most audacious and unresolved robberies in modern history. It serves as a sobering reminder that even the most fortified systems can be compromised when human trust is exploited.
