The good news is that the registration process is now largely done online through the CAC’s Company Registration Portal. Depending on what you are registering and whether your application has any problems, the process can be completed relatively quickly.
For a straightforward application, the CAC currently gives a service timeline of 24 working hours for new business name registrations and 24 working hours for companies, once the required documents have been received and any issues raised by the CAC have been resolved.
There is also an important update to consider. The CAC’s current i-CRP frequently asked questions page says that business name registrations are now AI-approved and processed instantly. Therefore, some business name applications may be approved much faster than the formal 24-working-hour service timeline.

Step 3: complete the registration application
After getting the approved name, you proceed with the actual registration.
For a business name, the CAC says applicants should complete the pre-registration form known as CAC-BN01 and upload the relevant registration documents through the Company Registration Portal.
For a company, you complete the relevant company registration application and provide the information and documents required for that type of company.
The information can include things such as:
- Approved business or company name
- Nature of the business
- Business address
- Contact details
- Details of the owners or proprietors
- Details of directors and shareholders where applicable
- Share information where applicable
- Other information required by the CAC
The exact requirements depend on what you are registering.
Step 4: upload the required documents
You then provide the documents and information required for your particular registration.

A query simply means the CAC has identified something that needs clarification, correction or additional information before the application can proceed.

These timelines apply when the CAC has received the relevant documents and any query raised has been resolved.
A working hour is not necessarily the same as a calendar day. Weekends and public holidays can affect how long a process takes in real-world terms.
Step 7: receive your electronic registration documents
The CAC has moved the registration process online and provides electronic registration documents through its registration platform.
For business names, the CAC says applicants receive an electronic Certificate of Registration and a Certified Extract of registration information.
For companies, the CAC says applicants can obtain the electronic Certificate and Certified Extract directly through the Company Registration Portal.
These documents provide evidence that the business or company has been registered with the CAC.
Why can registration take longer than expected?
Even though the CAC has published relatively short processing times, your personal experience can take longer.
There are several possible reasons.
1. The proposed name is unavailable
Someone else may already have registered the name or a name that is too similar.
You may then have to choose another name.
2. The name requires special approval
Some names and types of organisations require consent or additional review.
The CAC says consent applications for restricted names, limited-by-guarantee organisations and incorporated trustees have a published timeline of 48 working hours.
3. Information is incorrect
A spelling error, incorrect address, incomplete information or other problem can lead to a query.
You may have to correct the application before it can move forward.
4. Documents are missing
If the CAC requires a particular document and it has not been provided, the application may not be completed until the issue is resolved.
5. Payment problems
An unsuccessful or incomplete payment can prevent the application from moving to the next stage.
Can you register a Nigerian business yourself?
Yes.
For business name registration, the CAC specifically states that individual proprietors can register business names without using a legal practitioner, chartered accountant or chartered secretary.
The registration process is available through the CAC’s online registration system.
However, a person may still choose to use a professional or an accredited CAC agent if they are unsure about the appropriate business structure, documentation or registration requirements.
Using an agent does not change the CAC’s official processing timeline. The quality and completeness of the application still matter.
Can someone outside Nigeria register a Nigerian business?
The CAC’s current online system is designed to allow people to transact and register businesses online.
The CAC’s official registration portal also has information specifically addressing applicants who are outside Nigeria.
This means being physically outside Nigeria does not automatically prevent someone from using the online registration system. However, the requirements for the particular registration still have to be met.

What happens after registering the business?
Registration with the CAC is an important step, but it is not necessarily the end of everything you may need to do.
Depending on the nature of the business, you may have other obligations involving taxation, licences, permits, employees, regulated industries, local authorities or other government agencies.
For example, a restaurant, financial business, healthcare organisation and online retail business can have very different regulatory requirements even though all may need CAC registration.
CAC registration should therefore be viewed as the formal registration of the business, not as a universal licence to operate every type of business without further approvals.
Is CAC registration worth doing?
For many entrepreneurs, formal registration provides an important foundation for operating a recognised business.
The CAC says registration provides legal recognition under Nigerian law and can help businesses with activities such as opening corporate bank accounts, signing official contracts and accessing certain government or financial services.
It also creates an official record of the business in Nigeria’s corporate registry.
For someone starting a small business, the key decision is often not simply whether to register, but which type of registration is appropriate.
A sole proprietor who is starting a small personal business may have different needs from a company with several owners, investors and employees.
