Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s call to revive Colts football in Ghana.
Gyan said he was pleased to hear the President highlight the importance of juvenile football.
The former Black Stars striker was speaking at the launch of the Colts Football League.
Asamoah Gyan welcomes Mahama’s comments
Gyan said Mahama’s remarks came at the right time.
He explained that he had already discussed the revival of the Colts Soccer League with Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku.
According to Gyan, the President’s comments showed that grassroots football remained an important national issue.
“Our President of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama, last week we were watching television, and I saw him talking about juvenile Colts football. I was very, very impressed. I was very happy,” Gyan said.
He added that the timing of the President’s comments was significant.
“Me and the president of the Ghana Football Association have already discussed about launching the Colts Soccer League, and lo and behold, the President of Ghana himself also raised an eyebrow about Colts football,” he added.
Mahama questions the state of Colts football
President Mahama recently raised concerns about the state of grassroots football.
He questioned what had happened to the Colts League during a meeting with representatives of Ghana’s top clubs at Jubilee House.
“I do not know what happened to it, so I want to ask the Football Association: what has happened to the Colts League?” Mahama asked.
The President also expressed concern about young Ghanaian players leaving the country too early.
He called for measures to help promising talents gain more experience in the local league before moving abroad.
Colts football offers a pathway for young talents
The Colts system has traditionally helped identify and develop young footballers in Ghana.
A revived league could give players more opportunities to receive coaching and compete regularly.
It could also create a clearer path from youth football to professional clubs and the national teams.
Gyan believes the renewed focus on juvenile football is important for the future of Ghanaian football.
As the National Teams Ambassador, he continues to support efforts to strengthen the country’s football development system.
The GFA’s plans to relaunch the Colts League could therefore mark a fresh attempt to rebuild the foundation of the sport.
