Love, and learning to be okay with living

Love, and learning to be okay with living

There is something beautiful about love, but I think there is something even more beautiful about learning to be okay with living.

For a long time, we are taught to search for love as though it is the one thing that will make everything else fall into place. We grow up believing that happiness comes from being chosen, being understood, having someone to hold our hands through difficult days, or finding a person who makes the world feel a little less lonely. And while love can be wonderful, I have come to believe that life is about more than being loved by someone else. Sometimes, it is about learning to love the life we have, even when it doesn’t look the way we imagined.

Love is not always romantic. Sometimes, love is waking up in the morning and deciding to try again. It is finding comfort in a familiar song, laughing until your stomach hurts, watching the sunset, enjoying a meal, or sitting quietly with yourself without feeling the need to escape your own thoughts. Sometimes, love is simply allowing yourself to exist without demanding that you have everything figured out.

And perhaps that is what being okay with living really means.

It means understanding that life doesn’t have to be extraordinary every single day to be worth experiencing. Not every chapter will be filled with excitement, beautiful memories, or people who make us feel special. Some days will be ordinary. Some will be lonely. Some will leave us questioning where we are going and whether we are doing enough. But even those days deserve to be lived.

I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to become someone, to achieve something, to find someone, and to make our lives look meaningful that we sometimes forget to actually experience being alive.

We forget that there is no deadline for happiness. No universal timeline for falling in love, finding purpose, becoming successful, or figuring ourselves out. We are allowed to take our time. We are allowed to change our minds. We are allowed to be a work in progress.

And when it comes to love, perhaps we should stop treating it like a destination and start seeing it as something that can exist alongside our individual lives. You can want someone and still enjoy your solitude. You can miss someone and still have a beautiful day. You can dream of being deeply loved while learning not to abandon yourself in the process.

Because love should not be the only reason you want to experience life.

There is so much waiting beyond the possibility of romance. There are places you haven’t visited, conversations you haven’t had, friendships you haven’t made, books you haven’t read, and versions of yourself you haven’t met yet. There are mornings that might surprise you, opportunities you cannot currently imagine, and little moments of happiness that will arrive without announcing themselves.

I hope we learn to appreciate those things.

I hope we learn that being alone does not mean being incomplete, that being uncertain does not mean being lost, and that having a difficult season does not mean our lives are going nowhere.

Most importantly, I hope we become gentle with ourselves.

We don’t have to love every part of life to be grateful for the opportunity to experience it. We don’t have to pretend that everything is beautiful when it isn’t. We can acknowledge the pain, the disappointments, the heartbreak, and the unanswered questions while still leaving room for hope.

Maybe growing up is realizing that happiness isn’t always a grand feeling. Sometimes, it is peace. Sometimes, it is breathing a little easier. Sometimes, it is no longer waiting for someone to make life feel worth living.

And maybe the greatest kind of love we can discover is the love that makes us want to stay present for our own lives.

So, love deeply. Let people matter to you. Fall in love with someone, with places, with experiences, with little things. But don’t forget to fall in love with being here, too.

Give yourself permission to enjoy your life before it becomes everything you hoped it would be.

You are allowed to have a quiet life. You are allowed to be happy without having a reason that makes sense to everyone else. You are allowed to find beauty in simply existing.

After all, life is not only about finding someone to share it with. It is also about discovering that your own life is worth sharing.

And I think that is a beautiful place to begin.
