PJHay – Obuasi’s fast-rising voice in Ghanaian rap

Ghana’s music scene continues to evolve, and from the heart of Obuasi emerges a young artist steadily carving his own lane. PJHay, born John Opoku Sarkodie on June 23, 2003, represents a new generation of rappers blending authenticity with modern sound. His journey reflects both grassroots hustle and a clear artistic identity shaped by language, culture, and rhythm.

    Early life and education

Born and raised in Obuasi, PJHay grew up in a close-knit family as the first of two children. His upbringing in the mining town exposed him to everyday Ghanaian life, something that now influences his lyrical storytelling.

Academically, he followed a disciplined path. He attended Opoku Ware School, one of Ghana’s well-known institutions, before advancing to the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Kintampo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Disease Control. This balance between education and creativity highlights a grounded personality behind the music.

From street rap to recorded music

PJHay’s musical roots are firmly planted in the streets. Like many Ghanaian rappers, he honed his craft through “kasahare” sessions and rap battles, environments known for testing lyrical strength and delivery. These early experiences were not just practice sessions, they were competitive platforms where he consistently proved himself by winning battles and gaining recognition.

His transition into recorded music came in 2025 with the release of his debut single OBAA HEMAA. The track introduced listeners to his energetic delivery and command of the Twi language. He quickly followed up with songs like GO DOWN and WARM UP FLOW, building momentum and expanding his audience.

His latest release, WO (You), continues that trajectory, positioning him as an artist to watch across major streaming platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, Boomplay, iTunes, and YouTube.

    Sound and artistic identity

What sets PJHay apart is his rapid-fire Twi rap style. He combines the traditional feel of highlife with the global appeal of hip-hop and Afrobeat. This fusion allows him to remain culturally rooted while appealing to a broader audience.

His delivery is sharp, rhythmic, and energetic, often reflecting the competitive nature of his rap battle beginnings. At the same time, his sound carries a melodic undertone influenced by Ghanaian musical heritage.

    Independent movement and SBG collective

PJHay currently operates as an independent artist, not signed to any record label. Instead, he moves with his collective known as SBG, short for Still Biggest Geng. The group includes key members such as Elijah Atta (Papa Elia), Evans Addjie (Vans), Padmore Trendz (Padmore The Blogger), Clement Bannor (Kojo Monday), and Aaron Appiah Marfo (Pages).

This team structure reflects a common trend among emerging artists who prioritize creative control and grassroots support systems over traditional label deals.

    Where to find PJHay

PJHay maintains an active presence on social media, where fans can engage with his music and updates:

    • Instagram: @pjhay_1
    • TikTok: @pjhay_1
    • Twitter (X): @pjhay_mandem

    Final thoughts

PJHay’s journey is still unfolding, but the foundation is already strong. With a solid educational background, street-tested rap skills, and a growing catalog of music, he represents a blend of discipline and raw talent. As Ghana’s music industry continues to spotlight new voices, PJHay stands as one of the promising acts pushing Twi rap into new spaces.
