Coalition Against Galamsey condemns a violent attack on officers from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat in the Ahafo Region. The group says the assault threatens Ghana’s fight against galamsey.
The officers carried out a lawful operation to stop illegal mining. A group of men, allegedly linked to a sitting Member of Parliament, confronted them. The mob injured some officers and destroyed equipment before fleeing the scene.
The coalition condemned the violence and called it a direct challenge to state authority. It urged the President to order a quick investigation and ensure that everyone involved faces justice. The group said political power should never shield anyone from accountability.
Illegal mining continues to pollute rivers, destroy forests, and harm nearby communities. The coalition warned that such attacks weaken enforcement teams and embolden illegal miners. It also reminded Ghanaians that protecting the environment is a national duty.
The coalition urged Parliament to investigate the Member of Parliament accused of organizing the mob. It called on civil society, chiefs, and the media to speak out against violence and corruption in the mining sector. The group said silence only worsens the damage.
